How to Decorate Your New Home for Fall
Summer is nearly over, and fall will soon be here. So many changes come with the seasons: the kids are heading back to school, stores are swapping out swimsuits for sweaters, and the crisp air makes us want to cook something warm and comforting like a big, hearty stew. And your new home could do with some seasonal change, too!
So how can you change the look and feel of your new home to match the new season without breaking the bank? Here are a few tips and small changes you can make that will have a big impact!
Throw Pillows
An easy way to update the look and feel of your living area or bedrooms without springing for all new furniture is by swapping out your throw pillows! Bring in warm earth tones, heavier luxurious materials like velvet and brocade, and even a whimsical fall print. Add in some throw blankets in different fabrics and you’ll be feeling so cozy you’ll want to invite your friends in your new neighborhood in Alamogordo over for a hot cup of tea!
Flowers
Just because summer is over doesn’t mean it’s time to give up fresh flowers! Swap out your summer blooms for in season ones, like sunflowers and mums. Hunt down a vintage mercury glass vase in a thrift store (or DIY your own!) to amp up the rustic factor.
Peel & Stick Wallpaper
Here is another way to bring in fresh, new, seasonal colors without the commitment or price tag of a new paint job. Peel & Stick Wallpaper is a far cry from the glue on wallpaper of your childhood. This option is perfect for accent walls or small spaces and easy to install and take down.
Seasonal Produce
This is one time of the year when the in-season produce can double as decorations! Pumpkins, winter squashes, and gourds all have a longer shelf life than the more fragile fruits and veggies we see so much during spring and summer. Take advantage of their longevity by using combinations of all three as table centerpieces, mantel décor, or even by your front door!
Aroma
Certain smells bring us right back to different times in our lives; fresh cut grass brings us back to baseball practice, suntan lotion brings us to the beach, and the same can be said for fall scents! There are the obvious choices, like cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla, but there are less obvious choices as well, like orange blossom, cedar, and sage. Light a candle, diffuse an essential oil, or even simmer the actual spice in a pan of water to bring these fall aromas inside your home.
Outdoor Living
You’ve spent all this time bringing the fall inside, now its time to go out and enjoy the cooler weather! Adding outdoor throw pillows, blankets, and rugs to your outdoor living space will make it all that much cozier when temperatures drop. Fire pits come in a wide range of styles and sizes, from full installations, to fully contained portable units. Find the type that is right for your space and bust out the marshmallows! If you don’t have room for a fire pit, light several oversized pillar candles for a similar effect.
Now go out and enjoy all that the new season has to offer!
