New Mexico is known as “The Land of Enchantment.” And when you are surrounded by the mountains and breathing in the fresh mountain air you will experience why that’s its nickname. The Bureau of Land Management – Las Cruces District and Friends of Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks is offering free guided hikes for the community during every Saturday and Sunday in the month of September. This month is an ideal time for new homes in Las Cruces NM residents to experience the natural beauty of Las Cruces and the National Conservation Lands.

Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park – Is located just minutes from downtown Mesilla and less than six miles from downtown Las Cruces. There are 2.7 miles of accessible trails through this 300-acre nature preserve on the edge of the Rio Grande River. The Resaca Trail is ideal for picturesque views of the Organ Mountains. Keep your cameras ready to snap photos of all the birds you’ll see in this area since the park is an Audubon designated Important Birding Area. The park is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and cost is $5 per car. Click here for more details.

The Bar Canyon Loop – This portion of the Organ Mountains is perfect for both beginner and intermediate hikers. Bar Canyon is a 3.1-mile hike that starts at the Soledad Canyon Day Use Area. The hike includes two loops, in which one goes through the ruins of a small homestead. You’ll also see breathtaking views of the southern Mesilla Valley are abundant along the route. Entry is permitted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with exit allowed until sunset. Learn more by clicking here.

Baylor Pass – This 6.9 mile hike roundtrip is definitely not for the faint of heart as you are sure to feel the burn and challenge your lung capacity. Hiking Baylor Pass will lead you into the heart of the Organ Mountains. It is suggested that you start early in the morning to beat the heat. Once you are on top of Baylor Pass you will be able to enjoy the sounds of birds chirping away and witness panoramic views of Las Cruces as well as the town of White Sands. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just enjoy being around nature we encourage you to get out, enjoy the surrounding areas of your new homes in las cruces nm community, and take advantage of the free guided hikes being offered this month as part of Monuments to Main Street.
