How to Arrange Furniture in Open Floor Plan
Open concept floor plans have become popular over recent years and many homebuyers are seeking this type of floor plan when in the market for a new home. There are no barriers with open floor plans, making the space look more spacious since rooms aren’t confined by walls. Open floor plans also allow for more sunlight to come into the space. Open concept floor plans are also ideal for those who enjoy entertaining. You can interact with guests even when you’re out of the room because you are not separated by walls. Though there are lots of cons to open-concept living, furnishing the space can be difficult. Here are four tips for how to arrange furniture in an open floor plan.
- Pick a color pallet – Select one to use in each individual space. Add a few accent colors through accessories, rugs, and window treatments that will blend well with your color pallet.
- Define the spaces – Furniture can be used to define different spaces. A dining table will define the dining area, and a console table behind the sofa will separate the great room/living room from the kitchen or dining room, or a sofa can create a room divider. Placing a large rug under chairs or a sofa will create a conversation zone and help break up the room. You’ll be able to give the impression of a separate space while breaking up the room into zones.
- Functional layout – Your furniture layout should be comfortable and functional. If the objective for the room is to watch TV, then don’t have the sofas facing each other. If entertaining is the key, an oversized couch may work best in the space versus having chairs that don’t offer a lot of seating. This will provide lots of seating and create a cozy feel for the space. Include end tables, an end table, and ottoman to enhance the room
- Create a focal point – There’s a lot going on in an open floor plan. Install a lighting fixture, such as a chandelier or pendant lighting, to draw attention to and defines the dining area. You could also add a gallery wall in your great room or use the fireplace to create be the focal point.
